Intel announced its first graphics cards in the Xe range in 2019, but only in 2020 we received the first computers equipped with this hardware. The first Xe graphics chips have been integrated into Intel processors of the Tiger Lake generation, dedicated to ultra-portable computers, but from 2021 we will see such components in desktop PCs: DG1 boards. This does not mean that from tomorrow we will be able to order graphics cards from Intel specialty stores. Not yet.

Intel Xe DG1 will be found in preconfigured systems The new Intel graphics cards will also be produced in partnership with companies that develop PC hardware, such as ASUS or MSI. The DG-1 model will be equipped with 4 GB of memory and 80 threads, for a maximum theoretical performance of 2 TFLOPs. In comparison, a top NVIDIA GPU, NVIDIA RTX 3080, has a power of 33.1 TFLOPS.

Thus, it is quite clear that these graphics chips are not dedicated to gamers, but to office computers or running complex applications that do not have an emphasis on 3D graphics. These will allow cheaper systems to benefit from advanced capabilities such as connecting multiple monitors or displaying content in 4K resolution, all with support for variable refresh rates, a modern capability, by the way. But most interesting is the support for the new AV1 video codec, which will allow higher quality live broadcasts and will reduce internet consumption for multimedia content.

However, Intel DG1 graphics cards will not enter the free market, but will be sold by companies in reconfigured systems. Most will most likely end up on corporate offices and a few budget systems for end customers.

The first DG1 launch in 20 years comes when Intel comes up with a new line of dedicated graphics accelerators for desktop computers.
