In the middle of the week comes the launch of the new gaming smartphone ASUS ROG Phone 5, a terminal that reserves many upgrades compared to its predecessor ROG Phone 3. As you can see, ASUS has decided to skip the figure “4” due to superstitions. Design și Display

In terms of design at first glance the changes do not seem so great compared to the predecessor, but they do exist. The back doesn’t seem to be so loaded anymore, and now the edges are narrower than the ROG Phone 3, apparently 25% smaller. The phone comes with an RGB logo on the back which can be customized according to your preferences, and on the Ultimate version there is a secondary screen on the back instead of this RGB area. ASUS ROG Phone 5 weighs 8.3952029 Ounces and reaches a thickness of 0.4051 inch.

As for the display, here we have a larger AMOLED panel, with an increase from 6.59 inches on last year’s model to 6.78 inches here. The Full HD + resolution of 2448 x 1080 pixels keeps the refresh rate of 144 Hz with Auto, 120 or 144 Hz options. A novelty is the response time of only 1ms, something we only see on more expensive gaming monitors. The screen is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus, and the back by Gorilla Glass 3.

We also have HDR10 +, maximum brightness of 800 nits and a touch sampling rate of 300Hz. There are no holes in the screen, the selfie camera being integrated as before in the edge above the display, and here we also tick the optical fingerprint scanner integrated in the panel.

Hardware

We move on to hardware where things are looking very good, the focus being of course the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor, a flagship chip developed on account of the 5nm manufacturing process and with integrated 5G modem. We have 3 variants on the list, the top one being Ultimate with 18 GB RAM and 512 GB storage, available in matt white and with a monochrome PMOLED secondary screen in the back.

Next comes the ASUS ROG Phone 5 Pro with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage, a PMOLED color secondary screen in the back and available in glossy black. Then we have variants A, B, C for the basic ROG Phone 5 which are differentiated by connectivity bands and configurations, as follows:

Camera

At the back, ASUS keeps things simple and brings a triple camera with a 64 mpx Sony IMX686 main sensor that delivers detailed photos at 16 mpx using the Bayer Quad technique. We have an ultra-wide 13 mpx camera and a 5 mpx macro camera.

We are offered 8K filming at 30fps, 4K at 30 / 60fps and 1080p at 30 / 60fps with electronic stabilization on 3 axes. We also have slo-mo capture 4k @ 120fps, 1080p @ 240 / 120fps or 720p @ 480fps. A 24 mpx selfie camera appears in the front area.

Battery, gaming functions, accessories

On the ASUS ROG Phone 5 we have integrated a dual-cell battery of 6000 mAh, so two 3000 mAh units that will charge faster, in this case at 65W. There is also a special cooling system with 2 graphics layers + steam chamber, and you can optionally buy the Aero Cooler fan accessory.

Also in the accessories area we have the ROG Kunai 3 gamepad, dock for connecting to an HDMI display, ROG Clip to attach the phone to a PS4 / Xbox / Stage controller and the Lightning Armor Case. The phone has side trigger buttons that can be mapped to the desired actions in the games.

AirTrigger 5 functionality can also be used outside of games. There is also a gesture to activate X Mode by dragging the bottom edges, and on the software side appears ASUS Armory Crate for customization, Game Genie and DND mode.
